MBSEF Cycling Program Overview and Goals

The Mount Bachelor Sports Education Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of Alpine, Cross Country, Snowboard and Cycling competition in Central Oregon. MBSEF organizes and implements training programs and competitions for skiers, snowboards and cyclists.

The goal of the MBSEF Cycling Program is to provide Central Oregon children, aged 8-18, with an opportunity to participate in the sport of cycling in a safe, fun and structured environment.  In both the road and mountain biking programs we aim to help your child improve their bike handling skills, riding etiquette, fitness and strength, as well as gain exposure to the sport in a spirited and inclusive team atmosphere. To achieve this we will promote the enjoyment of cycling through quality coaching, fun rides, informative clinics and active participation from our athletes.

The Cycling Program is broken into two separate, but cooperative programs, the mountain biking program and the road biking program.
Mountain Bike Program:
This program is for children aged 8-18 with an emphasis on technique, proper equipment use and care, fitness and trail etiquette.

Road Bike Program:
This program is for children aged 12-18 with an emphasis on proper cycling technique, group riding etiquette, fitness and proper equipment use and care.

Cycling encompasses much more than simply racing.  We want our athletes to develop their riding skill, fitness, strength and most importantly, a love of the sport, not simply push them into racing.  Riders who demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm and independence will be encouraged to race. We consider racing an integral part, but not the backbone, of our program.

Safe - Fun - Learn

Junior Coaching Internship
Riders aged 15-18 will have an opportunity to act as Jr. Coaches for the mountain bike program.  As a junior coach they will assist our coaches in working with riders aged 8-11.  The goal of this program is to expose our older riders to teaching bike handling skills, trail etiquette, etc.  in a supported and familiar environment. To truly master a skill is to be able to teach that skill to another. Jr. coaches will also serve as role models and “big brother and sisters” to younger riders at practices, adventure days and races.
Interns will have the opportunity to participate in the MBSEF cycling programs at a reduced cost. They will participate as regular athletes two days a week and will act as junior coaches for remaining practice days. Interested athletes should contact Taylor Leach, taylor.leach@gmail.com for more information.
Cost reduction: for the 3 day MTB - normally $150 it would be $75, discounts for multiple sessions would not apply if athlete is receiving intern-cost reduction.
Schedule: Participants will chose 1-2 days per week that they will help with the younger riders. The first Thursday of ever session is “Bring a Friend Day”, this day will be a required day for the junior coaches to help out as we will need the extra hands.
To the interns:  A 1-2 page essay detailing why they would like to be an intern and what unique skills or qualification would make them a successful coach and role model for the younger athletes.   Please send to Taylor Leach at taylor.leach@gmail.com no later than 1 week before the start of the session for which you would like to be considered.

Adventure Days
The end of every session will culminate in a day-long Adventure ride. These may include rides from Swampy Lakes Trailhead back into town or larger loops on the upper trail system. The hope for these adventure days is to expose our riders to new trails, new riding experiences, as well as, give them an opportunity to challenge themselves and progress as a riders.
New this year, we will have lunch burritos generously made available to us by Long Board Louie’s at a very long cost to each rider.
These Adventures mean a long day out on the trails, kids should be pack accordingly with plenty of water, appropriate clothing, snacks etc.  The route for each trip will be announced several days before the ride and will be catered towards the riders in each session.

Coaching Staff
Safe, Fun, Learn

Luke Mason - I moved to Bend three years ago from Colorado to be closer to family, yet still pursue my love for coaching snowboarding and mountain biking. I am the snowboard school manager at Mt. Bachelor during the winter and during the summer I coach Mt. biking and enjoy all the wonderful outdoor activities that Oregon is blessed with. I love working outside with kids on bikes and boards and feel very lucky to have found programs that offer local kids and myself the opportunity to progress our education of such amazing pursuits.

Eric Lilley - A past resident of Bend, I returned to live full-time with my daughter, Ava, in 2007. I am a graphic designer by trade, and an adjunct professor at OSU.
Having been an alpine ski racer growing up, and continuing today as a Masters racer, this past winter was my first season working with MBSEF as an alpine coach. It is a role I truly look forward to continuing in subsequent seasons!
My love of cycling began in 1972 when I got my first bike at the age of three. My first mountain bike in 1979 led me to my first race/ride completion in 1980 at the age of 12. The Race to the Base, a race from Mount Bachelor to Shevelin Park in Bend.
In 1994, I moved to North Carolina and took a job as a bike mechanic and mountain bike instructor and guide. My love for competition grew, and I began a more focused pursuit of mountain bike racing. I returned to Oregon in 1996, and raced with the OSU cycling team through my graduation in 1999. I continued racing until 2003 in the Masters level. Now, my love of cycling is something I look forward to passing on to younger athletes.

Moira “Mo” Hundley - Moira Hundley grew up in the valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. From there she traveled west to Colorado where she got her degree in Outdoor Leadership at Western State College of Colorado. She has years experience as a professional ski instructor in Crested Butte, CO working with many local kid's programs. Her passion for the outdoors lead her to Bend in 2005 where mountain biking became a passion as well. She spends her summers riding the local trails as well as traveling Oregon to seek out the best single track the state has to offer!
Sean Haidet – After a short and unsuccessful stint with the WWF, Sean moved with his wife and two children from San Luis Obispo, CA to Bend three years ago.  Sean has raced mountain, road and triathlon (tri’s are his favorite) successfully for many years as well as maintaining his position as senior player on the semi-professional Steelheaders indoor soccer team. When not coaching for MBSEF, Sean will also be coaching the under 14’s for the Rush Soccer Club.
Scotty Carlile - Hello friends, the name is Scotty "The Hammer" Carlile. I pedal bicycles, run, drink lots of coffee, yerba'-mate', kombucha and eat well to sustain this happy little feeling I have inside of me. I've lived in Bend since '96, own a home here and work at Jackson's Corner (only one of the "hippest" and most friendly places).  As expected, I own many bicycles and plan on obtaining many more throughout my life, but my favorite is my commuter.  I'm just now on my second-year of working with MBSEF and coaching the little juniors and am having a blast doing so.  I'm pretty sure I learn just as much as they learn from me and we all have fun, so it's a win/win situation.  Oh yeah, and I'm racing my bike as fast as possible this year, and often find myself daydreaming of racing 'cross in Belgium.
Taylor Leach - Originally from Upstate New York, Taylor graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont with a B.A. in Biology and a Secondary Teaching License.  Taylor spent her winter balancing her job as the Assistant coach for the MBSEF Nordic team and racing for XC Oregon.  This is Taylor’s first year as the MBSEF cycling director and she is very excited about the opportunity to build, expand and improve this program.  When not at MBSEF, Taylor also works at Hutch’s Bike Shop and as a Substitute Teacher in the Bend-La Pine school district.
